The Market remains in Red Light mode according to the 1-2-3 model. The Inflation Model has remains at a negative two inflation stars ("deflation").

I thought that the S&P might fall beneath its average P/E of 17.0, but it bounced off of 17.1 and has headed back up to 19.30. Markets continue to struggle and certain sectors are looking more appealing. I have been looking at mining and metals stocks trading below book value. I still haven't seen the technical indicators showing a real strength here, so I am willing to wait.

Some of you have asked where I am putting my money since I have been emphasizing the short side of things. Let me start with the one that didn't work out: Exxon/Mobil. My calls evaporated along with fears of an even higher oil market. The one that did work out was puts on Simon Property Group. I sold puts when the underlying was at $90, and it had the nerve to rise to $93. This stock was bound to fall, though, because it is a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) in California commercial real estate. I figured last fall that it would fall because of falling California real estate prices, as well as eroding business margins. It's down to $54.

Have the markets fallen enough, so that they are ready to rise again? I'm going to wait until the charts tell me that this is so. I might still come in too early or too late, but I believe that we normal mortals with no psychic abilities may be able to profit when a trend has reversed and is well underway.

John Hussman, a mutual fund manager for whom I have a great deal of respect, says that stocks are no longer overvalued. Not urging us to run out and buy, he is saying that the long-term outlook is the best that it's been for some time, precisely because stocks have been hammered so badly.

I'm conflicted on the idea. I will keep my long/short balance and try to move in or out of long positions slowly.

The Market remains in Red Light mode according to the 1-2-3 model. The Inflation Model has remains at a negative one-and-a-half an inflation stars ("deflation"). In the tug-of-war between deflation and inflation, it seems like the Fed is pulling things back in its favor by printing all those dollar bills and stimulating the economy. The banks, however, are holding on to the additional cash as reserves, and not turning around and lending it out. I believe this will make deflationary forces pull back in its favor, and there is nothing that the Fed (or even five other central banks) can do about it.

Another bad week for the markets. Last Friday, the Dow fluctuated between -700 and +300 points on the day, closing down 122 points. I think we might be in line for a dead-cat bounce next week, which might be used to sell some more longs and get some shorts in position.

Remember that cash is a position, too.

Stocks for the week of Oct 5

These are the stocks that are passing at least three of my five filters, for the week of October 5. It is an unusual week in that the markets, the Congress, and the Fed are all providing lots of entertainment.

Mr. Market is quite beside himself with a deep blue funk. Even an interest rate cut and the passing of the TARP brings no cheer.

My advice? Run for the hills. Get out of long positions, or balance your longs with carefully chosen shorts. Get out of debt. Grow food for yourself. Yes, the market might still go up 400 points in the next day or three, but it will undoubtedly turn out to be a sucker's rally.

Enjoy your trading this week. Remeber that cash is a position, too.
